Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Jennifer “JJ” Snow, United States Air Force draws on a family legacy of military service and over two decades as an intelligence officer. JJ reflects on the deep transatlantic ties linking the US and Europe and why standing alongside our allies is both a moral and economic imperative. 

In the wake of renewed European conflict, she explores how defence investment – guided by strong ethical frameworks – is essential for protecting peace, sovereignty and democratic values.

The European Innovation Council’s (EIC) Corporate Partnership Programme has emerged as a benchmark for corporate–startup collaboration, translating deep tech into market outcomes at scale.  

1. Future Forces Demo Day 2025 is calling for startups (TRL6+) with tech to boost lethality across domains – apply by 24 August for a chance to showcase at Goodwood Estate on 1- 2 October and connect directly with MoD programmes and top UK defence primes. 

2. UK launches £1bn AI-powered battlefield network and new cyber and electronic warfare command to unify under a single strategic umbrella, signalling a decisive shift toward smarter, faster and more connected defence capabilities. 

3. The UK Space Agency will join the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology by April 2026 to cut red tape and speed up the support and development of the UK Space Industry. 

4. The UK switched on Quartet, said to be the world’s most advanced trapped-ion quantum computer, at the National Quantum Computing Centre in Harwell. Designed for high-precision tasks, it promises breakthroughs in areas like battery design and complex simulations–delivering results in minutes while consuming less energy than a household kettle. 

5. Rothschild & Co’s August 2025 Growth Equity Update highlights a sharp rise in defence spending and a shift in priorities from traditional platforms like tanks and warships to emerging technologies such as AI, quantum computing, autonomous systems and cybersecurity. Public and private capital are mobilising rapidly, signalling a new era of dual-use, investor-backed and tech-driven defence.
