Europe’s innovation dividend: Deep tech, defence & strategic resilience

In this edition, we explore what is shaping Europe’s future security and prosperity. From NATO’s renewed strategic posture to the EU’s structured innovation agenda, the direction of travel is clear: readiness, resilience and responsibility are becoming central to transatlantic cooperation.
This is more than a wave of investment and political momentum, it is an opportunity to align technology, capital and societal purpose. We feature a guest contribution from Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) Jennifer “JJ” Snow: “Europe’s greatest peace dividend lies in harnessing the region’s extraordinary talent, capital and purpose to innovate technologies that deter conflict, empower sovereignty and foster security and prosperity.”
Deep tech innovation is at the core of this shift. The UK is making strides with operational quantum computing, while AI-enabled robotics are beginning to integrate into sovereign defence supply chains. Vulnerabilities in cloud infrastructure serve as a reminder that technological progress must be matched by robust security measures.

In the wake of renewed European conflict, she explores how defence investment – guided by strong ethical frameworks – is essential for protecting peace, sovereignty and democratic values.
Structured collaboration moves centre stage in Europe’s innovation strategy
How do you unlock innovation at scale? Not with one-off pilots or siloed R&D; but through structured, strategic collaboration.
Strategy – Align goals, define KPIs and set clear governance.
Commitment – Secure top-level buy-in and build dedicated teams.
Skills – Build internal innovation capacity and cross-functional teams.
Experimentation – Start with pilots, learn fast and scale smart.
The European Innovation Council’s (EIC) Corporate Partnership Programme has emerged as a benchmark for corporate–startup collaboration, translating deep tech into market outcomes at scale.
